In 6 of this year I met a GL8 owner named Lao Zhou in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou. He drove through a section of flooded road with water about 15 cm deep, and when he came back and lifted the second- and third-row floor mats he found water everywhere underneath. This lead came from Lao Zhou's complaint — he had taken delivery less than 3 months earlier, and during Hangzhou's plum-rain season it rained continuously for 12 days. The floor-modification shop told him "aviation aluminium floor is waterproof, no problem," but after actually wading through water, water seeped in from the joints beneath the aluminium panel. This lead made me realise — "waterproof" and "sealed" are two different concepts, and the real key to a water-wadeable floor is the sealing workmanship at the joints.

1. Why is the GL8 floor especially prone to water ingress in the rain?

The GL8 has a relatively low overall floor height, and the original carpet is extremely absorbent. After retrofitting with an aviation aluminium floor, although the surface is waterproof, there are three high-risk joint points:

  • Second/third-row crossover joint: the boundary between the floor rail and the aluminium panel
  • Rear cargo area and second/third-row joint: the curved transition strip
  • Driver-to-passenger front crossover: the transition strip between carpet and aluminium panel

If these three joints have no secondary sealing process, after wading water will seep along the aluminium panel edge between the PE layer and the bottom aluminium panel, creating "trapped interlayer water."

2. 6 -Step Water-Wading Sealing Inspection Method

Step 1 : Inspect the Joints

After modification is completed, ask the shop to lift the corners of the second- and third-row floor by 5 cm, and visually check whether sealant has been applied at the joints and whether the PE layer is visible to the naked eye.

  • Pass: black sealant applied at the joint, no exposed PE layer
  • Fail: silver aluminium skin or milky-white PE layer exposed at the joint

Step 2 : Water-Pour Test

Using 500m L of bottled water, pour slowly from the position of the second- and third-row seat rails and observe for 30 seconds.

  • Pass: water beads form and roll off the aluminium surface; no seepage at the joint
  • Fail: water marks seep out at the joint within 5–10 seconds

Step 3 : Paper-Towel Absorption Test

Place an A4 paper towel beneath the joint where water was poured, wait 1 minutes, then pick it up and inspect.

  • Pass: no water stains on the towel, or only a trace of moisture
  • Fail: obvious water stains on the towel

Step 4 : Focused Inspection of the Crossover Position

The driver-passenger and second/third-row crossover positions of the GL8 are the most leak-prone areas. Require the shop to do a "U-shaped edge wrap" with sealant — this is an industry rule of thumb.

Step 5 : Cargo-Area Seal Strip Check

Lift the cargo-area floor and check whether the curved transition strip between the cargo area and the second/third row is properly seated.

  • Pass: the curved transition strip seats seamlessly against the original carpet
  • Fail: transition strip is lifted or has a gap with the carpet

Step 6 : 48 -Hour Re-Check

Return to the shop for a re-check after the first rain following delivery, and have the technician lift the corners again to check for any signs of trapped water.

3. Sealing Differences Between Floor Materials

Aviation Aluminium Floor

Sealant must be applied at joints + U-shaped edge wrap at the crossover position, adding 200–400 yuan per vehicle in sealing cost. Aviation aluminium hardness can reach Mohs 8, and with proper sealing workmanship it can last 8–10 years.

Fabric-Grain Floor

Overall density 0.8g/cm³, can float on water, but joints still require sealant treatment — otherwise the fabric grain will absorb water and swell.

Yunluo Series Full-Aluminium

6061 full-aluminium one-piece moulding, the best sealing performance, requires no additional sealing treatment, but the price is 12000+ yuan. Mohs hardness 7, service life can reach more than 10 years.

Solid Wood Floor (Phased Out)

Deforms severely after water absorption; strongly not recommended for high-frequency rainy-season use.

4. Common Water-Wading Misconceptions

  • Misconception 1: Aviation aluminium = fully waterproof — Wrong. Aviation aluminium is only waterproof on the panel surface; poor joint workmanship will still allow seepage
  • Misconception 2: UV printing is more waterproof — Wrong. UV coating has a microporous structure; long-term water wading accelerates aging
  • Misconception 3: You can wade through water right after modification — Wrong. Sealant needs 24 hours to fully cure
  • Misconception 4: HPL process is waterproof enough — Wrong. HPL is a wear-resistance process, not a waterproof process; joint sealing is the key

5. A Real Hangzhou Owner Case

After Lao Zhou's water-wading incident, he found another Hangzhou shop with 12 years of modification experience to redo the work — they re-sealed the three joints and did a U-shaped edge wrap at the crossover position, then ran another water-pour test after 48 hours; the paper-towel absorption test passed. In 7 of this year, during a Hangzhou storm with water reaching the licence plate, he drove 1.5 km back and inspected, and the second- and third-row floor was dry as new.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Will an aviation aluminium floor rust after water wading?

A: Genuine 6061/5052 aviation aluminium has an anodised surface treatment and will not rust under normal water-wading conditions. However, if water trapped in the PE interlayer does not dry for a long time, the bottom aluminium skin may develop mildew spots.

Q2: Will a fabric-grain floor deform after water wading?

A: The SPC fabric-grain texture layer itself is waterproof, but if the joints are not sealed, the water-absorption expansion coefficient is about 0.5%, which may cause 1–2mm of corner lifting.

Q3: Are water beads on the floor in the rain normal?

A: Condensation beads on the glass are a physical phenomenon unrelated to the floor. Water beads on the floor surface indicate sealing failure and require re-treatment.

Q4: How long after modification can I wade through water?

A: Sealant needs 24 hours to fully cure. Avoid water wading within 48 hours after modification.

Q5: Is there a water-wading depth limit for the GL8?

A: A properly modified floor is theoretically wadeable up to 30 cm, but depths beyond 20 cm are best avoided. Switch off the A/C outside-air recirculation during water wading to prevent water ingress through the A/C intake.

Q6: The shop says "we applied sealant" — how do I verify?

A: Ask the shop to lift the second- and third-row corners by 5 cm on the spot and visually check whether the sealant provides continuous coverage. No continuous bead = not sealed.
