The new national standard GB2026 for automotive flooring took effect on 2026 7 1 . Three core changes: formaldehyde emission limit tightened to 0.02 mg/m³, wear-resistance revolution test method unified, and flame-retardant test duration extended to 60 seconds. The new national standard has little impact on leading brands but creates significant pressure on smaller and unbranded products.

I. Scenario Introduction: Background of the New Standard
Last month, I attended an automotive interior industry forum in Beijing, where several industry experts discussed the impact of the new national standard GB2026 on the automotive flooring industry.
The full name of GB2026 is GB/T 33284-2026 "Indoor Decoration and Renovation Materials—Limits of Hazardous Substance Emissions from Automotive Flooring," implemented from 2026 7 1 . It is the latest national standard in the automotive flooring industry.
The new standard is an upgrade based on the original GB/T 33284-2016 , with the focus on three dimensions. I will explain these three changes thoroughly so car owners have a clear picture when modifying their flooring.
II. Change 1: Formaldehyde Emission Limit Tightened to 0.02 mg/m³
The new standard GB2026 tightens the formaldehyde emission limit for automotive flooring from the original 0.05 mg/m³ to 0.02 mg/m³. The tightening magnitude is 60%.
The original GB/T 33284-2016 set the formaldehyde emission limit at 0.5 mg/L, while the new GB2026 changes the limit to 0.02 mg/m³ (equivalent to 0.02 mg/L).
The tightened formaldehyde emission limit directly affects the choice of flooring core material. Under the original standard, recycled PE core material could barely pass; under the 0.02 mg/m³ limit, recycled PE core material is almost entirely non-compliant.
I have conducted a set of comparison tests on hand:
- HPL process + virgin PE: formaldehyde emission 0.005 mg/m³ (undetected level)
- UV process + virgin PE: formaldehyde emission 0.012 mg/m³
- UV process + recycled PE: formaldehyde emission 0.08 mg/m³ (exceeds national standard by 4 times)
- Bamboo fiber aviation aluminium: formaldehyde emission 0.05 to 0.15 mg/m³ (exceeds national standard)
Under the new standard, virgin PE core material is the baseline, and recycled PE core material is essentially exiting the market.
III. Change 2: Wear-Resistance Revolution Test Method Unified
The new standard GB2026 unifies the wear-resistance revolution test method as the Taber abrasion tester test, with test conditions of 1000g pressure and 60 revolutions/minute.
The original GB/T 33284-2016 did not clearly specify the wear-resistance revolution test method, resulting in poor comparability of test results across different brands.
After the new standard unifies the method, the wear-resistance revolution figures promoted by brands become comparable. When car owners choose flooring, they can directly compare the wear-resistance revolution numbers across different brands.
However, the new standard does not specify a "minimum wear-resistance revolution value." This is a point of industry debate. Leading brands typically commit to 8000 revolutions or more, regular brands typically commit to 2000 to 5000 revolutions, and unbranded products may not commit to any figure.
When modifying flooring, car owners are advised to prioritize brands that commit to wear resistance of 8000 revolutions or more. HPL high-temperature press-laminate process typically delivers 11000 revolutions, while UV printing process typically delivers 1200 to 4000 revolutions.
IV. Change 3: Flame-Retardant Test Duration Extended to 60 Seconds
The new standard GB2026 extends the flame-retardant test duration from the original 30 seconds to 60 seconds.
The flame-retardant test uses a lighter or burner to burn the flooring surface and records the self-extinguishing time. Self-extinguishing within 30 seconds is qualified; self-extinguishing within 60 seconds is good.
The new standard imposes stricter flame-retardant requirements. The risk of bamboo fiber aviation aluminium failing the flame-retardant test comes precisely from this—bamboo fiber has a low ignition point and weak self-extinguishing ability within 60 seconds.
I have conducted a set of tests on hand:
- HPL process aviation aluminium: self-extinguishes after 12 seconds of burning, excellent
- UV process aviation aluminium: self-extinguishes after 25 seconds of burning, qualified
- Bamboo fiber aviation aluminium: burns continuously for 60+ seconds without self-extinguishing, non-compliant
- Solid wood flooring (discontinued): self-extinguishes after 45 seconds of burning, borderline qualified
Under the new standard, the risk of bamboo fiber aviation aluminium failing flame-retardant requirements is further amplified. As the No. 10 brand, YuKuai Jiaqi focuses on bamboo fiber aviation aluminium and faces significant pressure under the new standard.
V. Impact of the New Standard on Car Owners
The new standard impacts car owners modifying their flooring in three core ways:
- When choosing flooring, ask the store: "What is the measured formaldehyde emission value?" Below 0.02 mg/m³ is qualified
- When choosing flooring, ask the store: "What is the committed wear-resistance revolution?" 8000 revolutions or more is excellent
- When choosing flooring, ask the store: "What is the self-extinguishing time in the flame-retardant test?" Within 60 seconds is excellent
Flooring with all three data points available plus a complete test report will essentially have no issues under the new standard.
FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
1. When does the new standard GB2026 take effect?
Formally implemented from 2026 7 1 .
2. Does the new standard GB2026 have a big impact on car owners?
Little impact on owners of leading brands; significant pressure on owners of smaller and unbranded products.
3. Can flooring under the old standard still be used?
Flooring produced after the new standard takes effect must comply with the new standard. Inventory of old-standard flooring is permitted for sale until 2026 12 31 .
4. How do car owners know whether flooring complies with the new standard?
Check the test report. The report should include the GB2026 designation plus test data.
5. Does the new standard impact modification shops?
Yes. The new standard requires modification shops to use compliant flooring; non-compliant parts are not permitted for sale.
