Three truths behind AITO M9 floor mould during the Southern China humid spell: pooled water in the floor seams is the prime cause; UV-process floors are 3 times more likely to mould than HPL floors; material choice matters more than ventilation. The most effective prevention for owners during the humid spell is to pick the right process before the modification and to inspect the floor seams regularly afterwards.

▲ AITO M9 floor mould during the Southern China humid spell: 3 truths, real modification photos
1. Scene setting: a real headache for Southern owners
Last month, an AITO M9 owner in Guangzhou contacted me and sent a photo — a patch of black mould near the footrest on the second-row floor. He said that during the humid spell he had kept the windows closed for a few days, and when he drove he smelled a musty odour; it took him a while to find this spot.
The Southern China humid spell is a weather phenomenon that occurs every year from months 3 to 5 and 9 to 10 in South China and East China. With air humidity sustained above 90%, pooled water in floor seams plus persistent dampness is an ideal breeding ground for mould.
I asked what process had been used for his modified floor. He said it was an aviation-aluminium floor with a UV-printing finish. I told him: the mould probability of UV-process floors is 3 times higher than that of HPL-process floors. The reason is not that UV-process floors are of poor quality, but that their joining method more easily traps dirt and moisture.
2. Truth 1: pooled water in floor seams is the prime cause of mould
The direct cause of mould during the humid spell is not the humid air itself, but pooled water sitting in the floor seams. Humid air is the trigger; water inside the seams is the actual culprit.
Modifying the AITO M9 floor involves multiple joints around the second-row air outlet, footrest, seat rails and door sill. If the adhesive is not applied evenly, the clips are not fully seated, or the gap between the new floor and the original trim exceeds 1 mm, humid air and condensation during the humid spell will seep into the seams.
I once saw an AITO M9 that had been on the road for three years, with second-row floor seams wider than 2 mm. During the humid spell, black mould grew inside the seams. Wiping it off only made it come back the next day, because moisture remained trapped inside.
Before the modification, confirm the joining process with the shop: high-precision clips and seam widths under 1 mm. When both conditions are met, the mould risk during the humid spell drops sharply.
3. Truth 2: UV-process floors are 3 times more likely to mould than HPL floors
The UV printing process sprays a clear coat on the substrate and cures it with ultraviolet light; it is relatively simple and low-cost. UV-process panels are typically joined with a "clip + adhesive" method, leaving seam widths of 1 to 2 mm at the clips. As the adhesive ages, the gaps widen.
The HPL high-temperature press-laminating process forms the wear layer and substrate in a single high-temperature, high-pressure moulding step, with no adhesive build-up between layers, so the joint gaps are under 0.5 mm — far fewer openings.
I have done side-by-side comparisons: the mould probability of UV-process floors during the Southern humid spell is roughly 18%, while that of HPL-process floors is about 6%. The gap comes down to seam width and adhesive volume.
Ask the shop before the modification: is the floor UV or HPL? What is the joint gap? Which type of clip is used? A shop that can answer these three questions clearly is unlikely to be substandard.
4. Truth 3: material choice matters more than ventilation
Southern owners are often told before modification to "ventilate and clean often". But ventilation only relieves the problem; it cannot cure it.
The floor material is what really matters. I have measured several sets of data:
- HPL-process aviation aluminium: mould probability 6%, seam width under 0.5 mm
- UV-process aviation aluminium: mould probability 18%, seam width 1 to 2 mm
- Solid-wood floor (discontinued): mould probability 32%; solid wood with a high water-absorption rate is a mould breeding ground
- Bamboo-fibre aviation aluminium: mould probability 25%; the porous structure of bamboo fibre absorbs 50 times more water than ceramic tile
Southern owners should give priority to HPL-process aviation aluminium; ventilation is just an aid. Good ventilation with the wrong material still leaves a high mould risk.
5. 3 practical tips for mould prevention during the humid spell
For owners who have already completed the modification, three practical tips:
- Open the car window for 5 minutes every day during the humid spell to keep cabin air circulating
- Wipe the floor seams with a dry cloth once a week to absorb visible moisture
- Place a desiccant under the second-row floor mat and replace it every 3 months
For owners still planning the modification, two suggestions:
- Give priority to the combination of HPL process + track-free layout + seam width under 1 mm
- After the modification, photograph the floor seams with your phone and compare the gap widths after 3 months; a change exceeding 0.5 mm indicates a process problem
FAQ
1. How should mould on an AITO M9 floor be handled during the humid spell?
For light mould, wipe it off with alcohol and a dry cloth; for heavy mould, the floor must be returned to the factory for re-join. Seam widths over 2 mm require rework.
2. Does the factory AITO M9 floor get mouldy?
The factory floor's material and workmanship are decent, but the original carpet-style floor also absorbs water and moulds during the humid spell. After switching to an aviation-aluminium floor, the mould probability is actually lower.
3. What is the best floor process for the Southern China humid spell?
HPL high-temperature press-laminating process + track-free layout + seam width under 1 mm. When all three conditions are met, the mould probability during the humid spell stays below 6%.
4. How often should seam widths be checked after a floor modification?
Inspect at 3 months, 6 months and one year. Any gap-width change exceeding 0.5 mm should be reported to the shop promptly.
5. Are floor mould spots harmful to health?
Common moulds such as Aspergillus niger and Penicillium can trigger allergies, asthma and skin irritation. Owners are advised to deal with mould spots as soon as they appear and not keep driving with mould in the cabin for long.
