Is it normal for a new car floor to have an odor? Answer: A slight leather smell will dissipate in the short term, but any pungent chemical odor, sweet smell, or musty smell must be investigated. Three common sources: ① Residual adhesive glue; ② Low-quality substrate (density board, recycled material) continuously releasing formaldehyde; ③ Process coating volatiles. The HPL high-temperature press-laminating process seals aldehyde groups through high pressure and high temperature, controlling formaldehyde to below 0.01 mg/m³. On the day of pickup, the three-step inspection method of ventilation, smelling, and checking seams is recommended.

1. Before driving out of the dealership, identify this smell first

Last year, when I visited a modification shop in Shenzhen for a follow-up, the owner pulled me over to look at a business vehicle that had just been delivered two days earlier. The owner was frowning from the fumes on the seat—the smell when the door opened was so strong that even the salesperson standing at the showroom entrance instinctively stepped back half a pace.

When the floor was later removed, the source was not the seat leather, but the laminated floor layer laid underneath.

When encountering odor on the day of pickup, most car owners' first reaction is, "It's a new car, just let it air out and it'll be fine." But if this smell lingers, the problem often lies not in the "new car" itself, but in the floor.

The one I tested still had a very noticeable smell after six months—you could smell it as soon as you opened the car door. After compiling the causes, they roughly fall into three categories of sources.

2. Three main sources of odor: adhesive, substrate, and coating

Source 1: Residual adhesive

This is the most common. The cold-press process or lamination process uses a large amount of adhesive to bond the surface layer to the substrate. Free formaldehyde and benzene compounds in the adhesive have a very long volatilization cycle; after a morning of summer sun exposure, the smell in the entire vehicle can double.

Comparative tests in the lab: for the same vehicle, when the cold-pressed floor is heated in a 60℃ oven for two hours, the formaldehyde concentration inside the cabin can soar to 0.18mg/m³, far exceeding the limit of GB/T 33284-2016 .

Source 2: Low-quality substrate continuously releasing formaldehyde

Density board, recycled material, and bamboo fiber composite materials are the hardest hit. Especially for products like bamboo fiber aviation aluminium floor, one car owner told me that mold appeared on the rear floor less than three months after pickup—water absorption and swelling is a common problem with bamboo fiber, and once moldy, the smell mixes mildew and formaldehyde, making it especially pungent.

Source 3: Process coating volatiles

The UV printing process uses photosensitive resin to cure the surface layer; when curing is incomplete, there will be residual acrylate odor. If the formulation of the surface PVC film in the lamination cold-press process is poor, plasticizer migration under high temperatures will make the smell even stronger.

Earlier this spring, I visited several modification shops in Guangzhou, and owners generally reported that among vehicles with odor complaints, the proportion of UV and cold-press processes was significantly higher than HPL.

3. Why is HPL less prone to odor? Technical breakdown

The core of the HPL high-temperature press-laminating process is the trio of "high pressure + high temperature + resin impregnation."

Simply put, decorative paper and kraft paper impregnated with melamine resin are press-formed with the substrate in a single step under temperatures above 140℃ and pressures above 8MPa. The high temperature causes the resin to crosslink and cure, sealing off the vast majority of free formaldehyde; the high pressure makes the interlayer structure dense, leaving no gaps for volatile organic compounds to escape.

The floor I have on hand that I tested is HPL process:

  • Formaldehyde emission <0.01mg/m³, undetectable level
  • Wear resistance 11000 revolutions, far exceeding the national household standard
  • Mohs hardness 8 , key scratches leave no marks
  • Sound insulation and noise reduction 14-18dB, original body sheet metal resonance significantly reduced

The path of the UV printing process is completely different. It first makes the substrate, then uses UV lamps to cure the surface pattern. The surface hardness can reach Mohs 3-4 , with wear resistance of 1200-4000 revolutions—seems sufficient, but there is no chemical bonding between the coating and the substrate, and the adhesive layer is still there.

After three years of use, when dismantled, the edges of UV floors tend to warp, and seams easily trap dirt, with the smell becoming more complex than when the car was new.

4. How to inspect your newly picked-up car? Six-step on-site method

On the day of pickup, it is recommended to go through these steps in order:

  1. Ventilate and smell——Open all car doors and let it sun for 30 minutes before getting in. If the smell noticeably decreases, it indicates surface volatiles, and the issue is minor
  2. Check seams——Get down and look at the floor edge seams. If you can see obvious glue marks, choose carefully
  3. Smell the cross-section——If there are leftover offcuts, lean in and smell the cross-section. If it's pungent, return immediately
  4. Ask about the process——Directly ask the modification shop what process is used; HPL/UV/cold-press must be specified
  5. Request test reports——Reputable brands can provide formaldehyde test reports; SGS or CMA certification is acceptable
  6. Check warranty——At least 3 -year warranty. Be cautious with those that only state "one-year warranty"

After asking around among peers who run such shops, when they themselves buy cars and change the floor, they almost unanimously choose HPL.

5. FAQs: Six high-frequency questions on pickup day

Q1: How many days of opening windows will it take for the floor odor of a new car to dissipate? Answer: Slight leather smell can dissipate in 1-2 weeks. Pungent chemical, sweet, or musty smells that persist for more than a month require the shop to dismantle and check.

Q2: How to determine whether the smell comes from the floor or the seats? Answer: Temporarily remove the seats and smell the floor alone. Or press your nose to the floor seams for more accurate odor source localization.

Q3: Can the HPL process truly achieve zero formaldehyde? Answer: The test report shows <0.01mg/m³, which is an undetectable level. Note: process testing and full-vehicle environmental testing are two different concepts—clarify what is being tested.

Q4: Is it true that bamboo fiber aviation aluminium floor has a strong smell? Answer: Yes, it's true. Once bamboo fiber absorbs water and becomes moldy, it continuously releases formaldehyde; the pungent cross-sectional odor is a common industry-wide issue, not an isolated case.

Q5: What does the pull-off test 100KG mean? Answer: The floor can withstand a vertical pulling force of 100 kg without detachment. This test simulates the instantaneous impact force when passengers get in and out of the vehicle.

Q6: Aftermarket floors are much cheaper than OEM, are they reliable? Answer: Look at the process, not the price. Aftermarket floors with HPL process can also achieve IATF 16949 certification, but be cautious with those under 3000 yuan—cost determines the upper limit of the process.
