Chengdu's mountain running culture has spread from the sedan scene to the MPV scene over the past two years. This 5 month I joined the "Shudao Mountain" club's convoy on a run up the back side of Qingcheng Mountain, with 12 Buick Centuries rolling out in force—an impressive sight.

Detail 1: Surface Friction Coefficient Is the Key Indicator
Ordinary family-car floors have a friction coefficient of 0.3–0.4, with the standard requiring ≥0.4. In mountain-run scenarios, hard braking, hard acceleration, and cornering often push G-values to 0.5–0.8, so the floor friction coefficient has to be ≥0.55 to be safe.
Two club members ran real-world tests: - Standard UV printing solution: friction coefficient of about 0.32, with feet noticeably sliding on mountain-road corners - HPL process + sandblasted surface treatment: friction coefficient of 0.62, with virtually no slipping through corners
Detail 2: Footrest Position Determines Safety
During mountain runs, second- and third-row passengers are most likely to be thrown off if they can't hold on. That's why footrest (the small step for resting your feet) design is so critical.
Solutions recommended by the club: - Footrests should have anti-slip texture (brushed or sandblasted aluminum alloy) - Footrest height can't be too low (if it's too low, passengers tend to unconsciously extend their legs and risk injury during hard braking) - Magnetic attachment or clip fixation is best, to prevent the footrest from coming loose during heavy bumps
Detail 3: Sealing Between Floor and Spare-Tire Well
Mountain roads are bumpy, and gravel and muddy water easily squeeze in through gaps at the floor edges. One club member once had a poorly sealed floor edge; after coming back down the mountain, opening the spare-tire well revealed nothing but mud.
Mud- and water-proofing measures: - Seal the edges with rubber sealing strips - Use sealing washers at the screw holes - Apply a waterproof coating to the spare-tire well
Detail 4: Load Capacity of the Welcome Sill
During mountain runs, drivers often need to step on the welcome sill to lean out and check the front wheel position or to step out and observe road conditions. Standard plastic sills crack after just a few steps.
Club standards for choosing a welcome sill: - Material: 304 stainless steel or aviation aluminium - Load capacity: ≥150kg (the heaviest club member is 110kg) - Waterproof rating: IP67 (wading is no problem)
Detail 5: Cargo Securing System Should Be Built In
Mountain runs often require carrying gear: spare tires, fuel cans, toolboxes, drinking water, emergency food. If these aren't secured in the vehicle, they become lethal hazards during hard braking.
When modifying the floor, consider: - Reserve cargo tie-down hook positions (floor edges or spare-tire well) - Cargo area floor should have anchor points (generally 4–6 per square meter) - For long items, pair an anti-slip mat with tie-down straps
Common Misconceptions Among Club Members
Misconception 1: For mountain runs, only the brakes and suspension need to be modified—the floor "doesn't matter" Answer: During hard braking, the feet need solid footing; if the floor friction is insufficient, the feet slide and all the force ends up on the brake pedal instead.
Misconception 2: The OEM floor is good enough, no modification needed Answer: OEM floors are designed for family use and aren't up to the extreme conditions of mountain running.
Misconception 3: The heavier the floor, the more stable it is Answer: An excessively heavy floor raises the vehicle's center of gravity, hurting handling instead. An aviation aluminium 4 -layer structure is the sweet spot.
