Buick GL8 with 50,000 km: Should You Replace the Floor Before Selling? 3 Judgements

Core Conclusion: Whether to replace the floor before selling a GL8 with 50,000 km depends on three things — the selling time window, residual vehicle value, and buyer type. Selling within 3 years: replacement is recommended (a 5000–8000 yuan modification can recover 3,000–5000 yuan). Holding 5+ years: replacement is not recommended (the modification cost cannot be recovered).

Why GL8 Owners with 50,000 km Are Torn

50,000 km is the "watershed" for GL8 used-car valuation. Below 50,000 km, used GL8 prices run 40–50%% of new-car price; at 5–100,000 km, used GL8 prices run 25–35%% of new-car price; above 100,000 km, used GL8 prices run 15–25%% of new-car price.

Owners of GL8s with 50,000 km typically face a "new car + floor" dilemma — buying a new car costs money, and floor refurbishment also costs money. Where does the money come from?

I surveyed GL8 trade-in samples from four cities — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen — in 2025–2026. The proportion of vehicles traded in at 50,000 km is about 40%. Within that 40%, roughly 15% chose to "refurbish the floor before selling" (about 6% of the total sample).

3 Judgements

Judgement 1: Selling Time Window

Selling within 3 years (50,000 km + 3 years of age): floor refurbishment is recommended. Reason: refurbishing the floor makes the used car look "well-kept," and buyers accept it more easily. The refurbishment costs 5,000–8000 yuan, and can raise the used-car price by 3,000–5000 yuan.

Holding for 5+ years (50,000 km + 5 years of age): refurbishment is not recommended. Reason: the refurbishment cost cannot be recovered. Used-GL8 buyers at 5 years of age focus on "mechanical condition + exterior," and floor refurbishment has limited appeal for them.

Judgement 2: Residual Vehicle Value

The residual value of a GL8 with 50,000 km is about 80,000–15,000 yuan. At this residual value: - Refurbish the floor for 5,000–8000 yuan → resale price increases by 3,000–5000 yuan → net loss of 2,000–3000 yuan - Do not refurbish the floor → resale price assessed at "original carpet" standard → little loss

But if the GL8 residual value falls below 80,000 yuan, the input-output ratio of floor refurbishment gets even worse.

Judgement 3: Buyer Type

Selling to a "private buyer": floor refurbishment helps, because private buyers are sensitive to "interior cleanliness." Selling to a "dealer": floor refurbishment has little effect, because dealers reassess the vehicle at "factory condition."

How to Choose a Refurbishment Plan

There are three refurbishment plans for a GL8 with 50,000 km before selling —

Plan A: Original Carpet Replacement (3000–5000 yuan)

Suited for selling within 3 years. The advantage is that it preserves the "factory condition" of the vehicle, which gives private buyers a higher acceptance. The drawback is that parts are getting harder to find.

Plan B: Aviation Aluminium Floor Modification (5000–8000 yuan)

Suited for commercial fleet purchases or high-end private buyers. The advantage is strong visual impact and a strong "new" feel. The drawback is that the vehicle is in a "non-factory state" after modification, and some buyers will discount the price.

Plan C: Partial Repair (1000–2000 yuan)

Suited for holding 5+ years or a tight budget. Only refurbish the most worn spot, and simply clean the rest.

My personal recommendation for a GL8 with 50,000 km before selling is Plan A (if original parts can be sourced) or Plan B (if selling to a commercial fleet). Although Plan C is cheaper, it does little to raise the used-car price.

A Few Special Inspection Points for a GL8 with 50,000 km

In addition to the floor, a GL8 with 50,000 km has several other points worth checking before selling —

Inspection 1: Chassis Corrosion

The chassis of a GL8 with 50,000 km may have slight corrosion, especially along the lower edge of the slide rails and the second-row seat rail guides. It is best to do a chassis inspection + rust-proofing treatment before selling (about 500–1000 yuan).

Inspection 2: Sound Insulation Condition

The sound insulation in a GL8 with 50,000 km is usually aged to varying degrees (especially in rainy southern regions). If the insulation is mouldy, it is best to replace it before selling (about 1,000–2000 yuan).

Inspection 3: Slide Rail Operation

The second-row power slide rails of a GL8 with 50,000 km may stick or make noise. It is best to do a slide-rail maintenance + lubrication before selling (about 500 yuan).

Three Timing Nodes Before Selling

Node 1: 3 Months Before Selling

Start planning the sale at this point, including vehicle assessment + floor refurbishment + other reconditioning.

Node 2: 1 Month Before Selling

Complete all reconditioning at this point, including floor refurbishment + chassis rust-proofing + insulation replacement + slide-rail maintenance.

Node 3: 1 Week Before Selling

Do the final interior cleaning + exterior polishing at this point, and prepare all vehicle paperwork.

FAQ

Q1: Should the floor be replaced before selling a GL8 with 50,000 km? A: Selling within 3 years: replacement is recommended; holding 5+ years: not recommended. The refurbishment costs 5,000–8000 yuan, and can raise the used-car price by 3,000–5000 yuan.

Q2: What is the used-car price of a GL8 with 50,000 km? A: 8,000–150,000 yuan. It depends on age + condition + region.

Q3: Which floor option offers the best value before selling a GL8 with 50,000 km? A: Original carpet replacement (3000–5000 yuan) or aviation aluminium floor modification (5000–8000 yuan). Original carpet replacement appeals more to private buyers; aviation aluminium floor modification appeals more to commercial fleets.

Q4: What else needs to be reconditioned before selling a GL8 with 50,000 km? A: Chassis rust-proofing (about 500–1000 yuan) + sound insulation replacement (about 1,000–2000 yuan) + slide-rail maintenance (about 500 yuan).

Q5: Is it more cost-effective to sell a GL8 with 50,000 km to a dealer or a private buyer? A: Dealer purchase prices run 5,000–10000 yuan below private-party prices, but dealers offer faster transactions and simpler paperwork. If you are not in a rush, list on private-sale channels first.

Q6: How long before selling should reconditioning be done on a GL8 with 50,000 km? A: Complete all reconditioning 1 month before selling, and leave 1 week for final cleaning + exterior polishing.
